Pune, May 12 – A 19-year-old medical student from AIIMS Bhopal allegedly died by suicide in Pune on Monday, reportedly due to academic stress and curriculum changes, police said.
The deceased, identified as Utkarsh M. Shingne from Maharashtra’s Beed district, was found in a bathroom at a flat in the Panchratna Housing Society in Wanowrie area. According to Deputy Commissioner of Police Rajkumar Shinde, the police control room received a call about the incident at 10:15 am.
Investigations revealed that Shingne, who had come to Pune to participate in a sports competition, had been suffering from depression and was undergoing medical treatment over the past few months.
"A suicide note was discovered on his WhatsApp account, citing academic stress, a change in the medical curriculum, and strict attendance requirements as reasons behind his decision," DCP Shinde stated.
Authorities said Shingne had allegedly ordered a knife-like weapon online days earlier and used it to end his life. He reportedly slit his throat inside the bathroom.
Shingne was an exceptional student, having secured 710 out of 720 marks in the NEET exam. His father is a practicing doctor and his brother is also pursuing a medical degree.
The Wanowrie police have launched further investigations into the case.
