Aircraft tech glitches reported by Indian airlines fall in last 3 years: Govt

New Delhi, Feb 3 (PTI) – The number of technical glitches reported by Indian airlines has seen a steady decline over the past three years, according to official data released on Monday. From January 2024 to January 2025, 273 technical faults were reported across 10,69,680 flights. This marks a significant improvement compared to 390 faults in 2023 for 11,94,777 flights and a much higher count of 723 glitches in 2022 for 9,97,041 flights.

Civil Aviation Minister K. Rammohan Naidu, in a written response, highlighted that the data indicates a downward trend in technical snags across airlines. He noted that such issues are a routine occurrence in aircraft, often resulting from malfunctions or improper functioning of components, systems, or accessories.

Government Push for Indigenous Aircraft Manufacturing

In a separate statement, Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol emphasized the government's commitment to fostering aircraft manufacturing in India. He stated that efforts are underway to develop a robust ecosystem for producing regional transport aircraft and related equipment through both public and private enterprises.

Bengaluru-based CSIR-NAL (Council of Scientific and Industrial Research – National Aerospace Laboratories) has successfully developed the Hansa-3 (NG), a two-seater indigenous trainer aircraft, which has been certified by the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for use in commercial pilot training programs.

"An Expression of Interest (EoI) has been issued to identify prospective firms for the commercial production of Hansa-3 (NG)," Mohol stated.

Additionally, the development of the Saras Mk2, a 19-seater Light Transport Aircraft, is currently underway at CSIR-NAL. The initiative involves collaboration with Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) to advance indigenous aviation capabilities.

With a visible reduction in aircraft technical faults and the government's increasing efforts toward self-reliant aviation manufacturing, India’s civil aviation sector appears to be moving towards enhanced safety and technological progress.
