Airtel's Gopal Vittal named as acting chair of GSMA board

New Delhi, February 3 (PTI) – Gopal Vittal, Vice Chairman and Managing Director of Bharti Airtel, has been appointed as the acting chair of the GSMA Board, following the resignation of José Maria Álvares-Pallete, Chairman and CEO of Telefónica. The announcement was made in an official release on Monday.

Vittal, who also serves as the Deputy Chair of GSMA, assumes the role after Álvares-Pallete stepped down from his position at Telefónica, thereby vacating the chairmanship of the global telecom industry body.

"Airtel is pleased to announce that Gopal Vittal has been appointed as the acting chair of the GSMA Board. Gopal was recently re-elected as the Deputy Chair and has previously served as a key member of the board during the 2019-2020 term," the company stated in its release.

The GSMA represents the global telecom industry, encompassing over 1,100 companies worldwide. Its members include telecom service providers, device manufacturers, software companies, equipment suppliers, internet firms, and organizations from adjacent industries.

Vittal's leadership in GSMA is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of the global telecom ecosystem.
