Calls for Inclusive Consultation Before Amending APMC Act; Supports Unified National Market Vision

Mumbai, May 15 — Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar on Thursday underscored the need to safeguard farmers' interests and uphold the rights of elected members of agricultural market committees while aligning state-level reforms with the Centre’s National Agricultural Market (e-NAM) initiative.

At a key meeting focused on issues surrounding agriculture market committees, Pawar emphasized that the core objective of these committees must be to empower farmers economically by offering them secure, transparent platforms to sell their produce.

"The elected members of market committees represent the voice of farmers and various sections of society. According to an official release, their rights must be protected to ensure agricultural and social welfare," Pawar stated.

Proposed Amendment to APMC Act

A proposal has been submitted to amend the Maharashtra Agricultural Produce Marketing (Development and Regulation) Act, 1963, to align with the Centre’s agenda of developing a unified National Agricultural Market. The Centre's plan includes setting up new nationally recognised market committees or converting existing ones, with government-appointed members.

Pawar, however, insisted that any changes at the state level should only be made after extensive consultations with farmer representatives. He advocated strengthening existing committees to enhance operational efficiency and broaden their impact.

Assurance to Trade Associations and GST Focus

The deputy chief minister also addressed concerns from trade associations regarding the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime. He assured that the government would raise their suggestions at the upcoming GST Council meeting, especially those aimed at reducing trader harassment and streamlining tax compliance.

Pawar emphasized the need to improve GST collection systems and crack down on tax evasion. In a strong message to enforcement agencies, he directed the concerned departments to take firm action against extortion and other criminal activities in the industrial and commercial sectors to maintain a safe business environment.

The meeting concluded with the state government's commitment to foster a transparent, farmer—and trader-friendly ecosystem while integrating state markets with the broader national framework.
