Alappuzha, Kerala: Elevated Road Girders Collapse, No Casualties Reported

On Monday morning, a significant incident occurred along the beach stretch of the Alappuzha Bypass, where four large girders of an elevated road under construction collapsed, sparking panic among locals and authorities.

The collapse, which took place around 11 a.m., fortunately did not result in any casualties, according to local officials. District Collector Alex Varghese visited the site shortly after the incident to assess the situation.

In a statement, Varghese confirmed that officials from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had briefed him about the event. They informed the collector that the matter had been escalated to higher authorities in New Delhi. The NHAI also assured that a detailed inquiry would be launched to determine the cause of the collapse.

The District Collector added that he has already submitted a report to state government authorities for further action. According to NHAI, the girders involved in the collapse had been launched only seven days prior to the incident.

Initial investigations suggest that the collapse may have been triggered by the slippage of one girder, possibly caused by a slight upward curve in the road’s alignment. CCTV footage of the incident shows the moment of collapse, sending a large cloud of dust into the air.

The NHAI's inquiry is expected to shed light on the exact causes of the incident, with authorities closely monitoring the situation.
