Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh – February 28: A suspected case of food poisoning has left 20 people hospitalized in Aligarh after they consumed food items made from ‘kuttu’ (buckwheat) flour during the Maha Shivratri celebrations, officials reported on Friday. The district administration has initiated an investigation into the incident.
According to officials, all affected individuals are residents of the old city and had purchased the buckwheat flour from various shops located in the Delhi Gate, Baradari, and Khair Road areas.
District Magistrate (DM) Sanjeev Ranjan has taken swift action, ordering a thorough probe into the matter. Authorities have collected samples of the buckwheat grain—widely used in meals prepared during religious fasts—from multiple shops in the affected regions for testing.
Out of the 20 individuals who required hospitalization, 12 have been discharged, while eight remain under medical supervision at various hospitals. DM Ranjan assured the public that all affected individuals are now out of danger.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the contamination may have stemmed from flour sold in the open market. “Further action will be determined once the investigation report is received,” Ranjan stated.
Authorities have urged citizens to exercise caution while purchasing food items, especially those consumed during religious fasts, to prevent such incidents in the future.
