New AI-Powered Solutions Aim to Enhance Mobility and Independence for PwDs
New Delhi, May 18 — The Artificial Limbs Manufacturing Corporation of India (ALIMCO) is set to revolutionize the field of assistive technology with a new lineup of AI-powered devices aimed at empowering persons with disabilities (PwDs). The announcement was made during the company’s Annual General Meeting for the fiscal year 2024-25.A public sector undertaking under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, ALIMCO is integrating artificial intelligence into its next-generation products to promote inclusive and affordable innovation.
Innovations in the Pipeline
Senior officials revealed that several AI-enabled devices are in advanced stages of development or nearing rollout. These include:- Smart mobility aids
- A universal socket
- Upgraded motorised tricycles and wheelchairs
- Commode wheelchairs
- Assistive canes for the visually impaired
"True empowerment begins with access to technology that enhances independence and dignity. At ALIMCO, we are leveraging AI and indigenous innovation to build a future where no one is left behind," said Praveen Kumar, CMD, ALIMCO.
Strengthening Outreach and Accessibility
ALIMCO is actively collaborating with state governments, NGOs, district administrations, and the Red Cross Society to improve access to assistive devices for both PwDs and senior citizens. Under the Pradhan Mantri Divyasha Kendra (PMDK) initiative, the corporation is working to enhance last-mile delivery of aids, particularly in remote and aspirational districts.Additionally, ALIMCO is partnering with special schools to ensure that children in need are provided with appropriate assistive devices. The organisation is also engaging with state project directors of the Samagra Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) through dedicated conferences aimed at boosting awareness and coordination.
“These conferences aim to raise awareness and enhance synergy with state education departments for identifying and supporting more Children with Special Needs (CWSN) under the Centre's ADIP scheme,” a senior official noted.
