Allahabad HC asks ASI to clean Jama Masjid in Sambhal

Prayagraj (UP), February 28: In preparation for the holy month of Ramzan, the Allahabad High Court on Friday directed the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to undertake immediate cleaning of the premises of Jama Masjid located in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh. However, the court refrained from issuing permission for whitewashing the mosque.

Justice Rohit Ranjan Agarwal passed this directive after hearing an application from the Committee of Management of Jama Masjid, which had sought the court's permission for cleaning and whitewashing the mosque before Ramzan.

Earlier, on Thursday, the High Court had directed ASI to carry out an urgent inspection of the mosque premises. A three-member team from ASI was constituted, which submitted its detailed inspection report by 10 am on Friday. According to this report, the mosque’s interior currently has ceramic paint, and there is no immediate requirement for whitewashing.

During Friday's hearing, Senior Advocate S.F.A. Naqvi, representing the mosque management committee, clarified that their primary concerns were whitewashing and installation of lighting. Responding to the submission, Justice Agarwal instructed ASI to ensure the removal of dust and clearing of overgrown grass on the premises.

Naqvi assured the court that the cleaning activities would not cause any hindrance. Additionally, the Advocate General of Uttar Pradesh assured the court that the state administration would ensure the maintenance of law and order during the process.
