Amethi, February 27 – The death of a 75-year-old man following surgery at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital in Amethi has led to chaos, with the deceased’s family alleging medical negligence and claiming that a doctor involved in the procedure was under the influence of alcohol. The incident has prompted the district administration to order an investigation.
According to the police, the family of Shiv Ram Mishra, a resident of Mau village, created a ruckus on the hospital premises, demanding action against the accused doctor. Mishra’s son, Dev Prakash, lodged a complaint at Munshiganj police station, alleging that his father’s death was caused by the recklessness of Dr. Sanjay Dwivedi, who was allegedly drunk during the procedure.
Family's Allegations and Police Response
Prakash stated that his father, who was fully mobile, was admitted to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital on Wednesday after experiencing chest pain. He was examined by Dr. Satyendra Tiwari, a cardiologist, who then performed surgery. During the procedure, Dr. Dwivedi, who was allegedly intoxicated, was present and his negligence led to Mishra’s death, according to the complaint.Prakash further claimed that Dr. Dwivedi was caught by bystanders and handed over to the police, but the authorities later released him. The incident triggered outrage, with family members and relatives protesting at the hospital throughout the night. Police personnel were deployed at the hospital gate to control the situation.
Superintendent of Police Aparna Rajat Kaushik confirmed that an FIR is in process, and appropriate action will be taken following an investigation.
Hospital’s Defense and Administrative Action
The hospital, however, refuted the allegations, asserting that Dr. Dwivedi had no role in the cardiology department or the patient’s surgery. Awadhesh Sharma, the hospital’s CEO, clarified that Mishra had suffered a heart attack before being brought in, and despite surgery and ventilator support, he could not be saved after another heart attack during the procedure. On the accusation against Dr. Dwivedi, Sharma assured that an internal probe has been initiated, and if found guilty, departmental action will follow.
Meanwhile, Amethi Chief Medical Officer (CMO) Dr. Anshuman Singh has announced the formation of a three-member investigation team to examine the matter. The administration will take necessary steps based on the team’s findings.
Sanjay Gandhi Hospital is operated by the Sanjay Gandhi Memorial Trust, New Delhi, with former Congress president Sonia Gandhi serving as its chairperson and Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, as a trustee.
Authorities are now closely monitoring the case, as both police and medical teams proceed with their investigations into the shocking allegations.
