New Delhi, March 2, 2025 – Union Home Minister Amit Shah reiterated the Modi government's uncompromising approach toward eradicating drug trafficking and addiction, emphasizing the administration's commitment to a "drug-free Bharat." In a post shared on X, Shah stressed that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the government will continue its battle against the drug menace through "ruthless" and "meticulous" investigations, ensuring severe punishment for those involved in the trafficking of narcotics.
Shah's message highlighted the successful conviction of 29 drug traffickers across 12 cases in India, a clear indication of the government's zero-tolerance policy toward drugs. These convictions are attributed to the National Narcotics Control Bureau's (NCB) strategic investigation tactics, which include a comprehensive "bottom-to-top" and "top-to-bottom" approach, ensuring thorough action against drug lords at all levels of the trafficking chain.
According to an official release, the NCB’s sustained efforts have led to significant seizures and arrests across multiple cases in recent years. Among the most notable cases:
- Gujarat, 2019: The seizure of 23.859 kg of charas at Sabarmati Railway Station in Ahmedabad resulted in the conviction of three individuals, who were sentenced to 14 years in prison.
- Madhya Pradesh, 2022: The NCB intercepted two vehicles in Shahdol, seizing 123.080 kg of ganja. Four individuals were arrested and sentenced to 12 years of rigorous imprisonment with a fine of ₹2 lakh each.
- Punjab, 2022: In the Chandigarh Zone, officers intercepted a parcel containing 438 grams of opium, which was packed inside two hockey sticks. Two individuals were sentenced to three years in prison for attempting to smuggle the drugs to Canada.
- Kerala, 2021: A Zimbabwean woman arriving at Cochin International Airport was arrested after 2.910 kg of heroin was found in her luggage. She was sentenced to 11 years in jail.
The NCB's continuous success is a reflection of its unwavering determination to fight the drug trade, ensuring accountability and deterrence for those who exploit vulnerable populations for monetary gain. Shah reaffirmed that the government's commitment to a drug-free India by 2047 will continue to strengthen under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The Home Ministry's statement emphasized that the NCB's achievements align with the government's broader vision to dismantle the drug trafficking networks threatening India's youth and national security.
