New Delhi, Feb 28: Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday spoke with Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to assess the situation following an avalanche in the Chamoli district that has left 41 Border Roads Organisation (BRO) workers trapped. Shah emphasized that the government's priority is to ensure the safe evacuation of all those affected by the disaster.
The avalanche struck near the high-altitude border village of Mana, burying a BRO camp situated between Mana and Badrinath. According to Chamoli District Magistrate Sandeep Tiwari, a total of 57 men were initially trapped under the snow, but 16 were successfully rescued.
Shah took to social media platform ‘X’ to provide an update on the relief efforts, stating, "Spoke to Chief Minister Shri @pushkardhami ji, DG ITBP and DG NDRF regarding the glacier burst in Chamoli, Uttarakhand. Our priority is to safely evacuate the people trapped in the accident. The local administration is engaged in rescue operations with full readiness. Two teams of NDRF are also reaching the spot soon."
The affected area, Mana, is located just three kilometers from Badrinath and holds strategic importance as the last Indian village near the India-Tibet border, situated at an altitude of 3,200 meters.
Rescue operations are underway, with multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), mobilized to bring the remaining trapped workers to safety.
Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring swift and coordinated efforts to minimize casualties and facilitate a successful rescue mission.
