Daily Wagers Among Victims as Toxic Liquor Claims More Lives in Majitha

Amritsar, May 14 — The death toll in the Amritsar hooch tragedy has climbed to 23, with two more fatalities reported from the Majitha area on Wednesday, police confirmed.

Both deceased victims were residents of Bhangwan village, and their deaths followed the consumption of spurious liquor laced with methanol, a toxic chemical typically used in industrial applications.

Widespread Grief Across Villages

According to officials, the deaths have been reported from several villages, including Bhangali, Patalpuri, Marari Kalan, Talwandi Khumman, Karnala, Bhangwan, and Therewal. Most of the victims were daily wage earners, heightening the economic and emotional toll on their families.

Manjit Kaur, sister of the deceased Joginder Singh, expressed despair over their future, stating it would now be challenging to support their household. Another victim, Ramandeep Singh (38) from Bhangali Kalan, is survived by his wife and two children, who are now grappling with the tragedy.

Methanol Identified as Culprit in Toxic Brew

Investigations revealed that methanol was procured in bulk through online platforms and used to concoct the lethal liquor. Methanol, a light and colorless compound, is hazardous and often illegally substituted for ethanol in illicit alcohol manufacturing due to its lower cost.

Arrests, Suspensions, and Criminal Charges

Police have arrested 10 individuals, including the alleged kingpin behind the operation. In a crackdown on official negligence, Deputy Superintendent of Police (Majitha) Amolak Singh and Majitha Station House Officer Avtar Singh have been suspended. Two excise department officers have also faced suspension.

Two separate FIRs have been lodged under sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 103 (murder) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, along with applicable provisions of the Excise Act and SC/ST Act at Majitha and Kathunangal police stations.

Government Steps in with Relief Measures

On Tuesday, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann announced an ex gratia of Rs 10 lakh for the families of each deceased. He further assured that the state would cover the complete educational expenses of all children who lost parents in the incident.

As the investigation continues, the incident has spotlighted the persistent issue of illicit liquor production and the dire need for stringent regulatory oversight.
