Shrimp Price Crash and Export Woes Prompt Government Action
Amaravati, April 8 — Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu has pledged unwavering support to the state’s aquaculture sector, which has been severely impacted by retaliatory tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.Aquaculture, which ranks as the fourth largest sector in Andhra Pradesh, contributed nearly 9% to the state's Gross Value Added (GVA) in the fiscal year 2024–25, amounting to over ₹1.3 lakh crore. For 2025–26, Naidu has set an ambitious target of ₹1.54 lakh crore, maintaining the sector’s 9% share in GVA.
"No Need to Panic": CM Urges Unity Amid Export Setback
Addressing concerns through a press release on Monday, Naidu acknowledged the unexpected nature of the current crisis but urged calm.He assured aquaculture farmers that the government would support their request to provide freshwater for shrimp ponds — a step aimed at curbing diseases and boosting yields.“The issue plaguing the aqua sector now is an unexpected one. However, there is no need to panic. Let's all strive together to solve the problem,” he stated.
Price Assurance and Export Market Relief
To cushion the blow from falling prices, Naidu directed traders to purchase 100-count shrimp (approximately 100 shrimp per kilogram) at ₹220 per kg, offering a more viable rate for farmers. Prices have recently plunged from ₹280 to ₹200–210 per kg, according to industry sources.Shrimp exporters also highlighted the need for new market access through free trade agreements with South Korea and the European Union. In response, the chief minister assured them he would escalate the matter to the central government.
Naidu also announced the formation of a dedicated committee to address long-term issues in the aquaculture sector.
Opposition Criticizes NDA Government
Meanwhile, former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy criticized the NDA government for failing to respond adequately to the crisis. Reddy alleged that traders aligned with the ruling coalition had formed a syndicate to exploit farmers during the global trade disruption. He attributed the shrimp price crash to this exploitation and inaction from the government amid growing international tariff concerns.
