Andhra Pradesh Unveils Strategic Plan for Port-Based Economy Along 1,000-Km Coastline.webp

Amaravati, May 13, 2025—Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday announced an ambitious plan to harness the state’s 1,000-kilometre coastline by developing a robust port-based economy. The initiative includes setting up ports or fishing harbours at 50-kilometre intervals to catalyze economic growth, infrastructure development, and employment generation.

According to an official press release, the chief minister stated, “We have unveiled a strategic plan to build a port-based economy by harnessing Andhra Pradesh’s 1,000-kilometre coastline.”

Ship Building and Repair Cluster Proposed at Dugarajapatnam

In line with the Centre’s bifurcation-era commitments, a key highlight of the plan is the proposed development of a Ship Building and Repair Cluster at Dugarajapatnam in Nellore district. Based on an initial feasibility study, the project will be developed over 2,000 acres through a joint effort between the central and state governments.
  • 1,000 acres will be allocated for core ship-building units
  • 1,000 acres will host ancillary industries supporting the sector
The envisioned infrastructure includes a greenfield port integrated with ship-building and repair capabilities such as four dry docks, outfitting jetties, and a ship-lift facility.

Investment and Employment Projections

The central government is expected to invest Rs 3,500 crore in the project, while the Andhra Pradesh government will contribute land as equity. A Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) will be created to attract global players in shipbuilding.

Chief Minister Naidu projected that the initiative would attract Rs 26,000 crore in investments and create 5,000 direct and 30,000 indirect jobs.

Visakhapatnam Port to Play Key Role

Naidu also directed officials to expedite the preparation of a detailed action plan. He stressed the need to enhance cargo movement through Visakhapatnam Port, which he said is critical for driving the state’s economic growth.

This port-led development strategy marks a significant push by the Andhra Pradesh government to leverage its maritime strengths for long-term industrial and economic transformation.
