Anil Kakodkar Emphasises Academia’s Role in Nuclear R&D at ICT Conclave

Pune, May 12 – In a powerful address underscoring the critical role of research and academia in national development, former Atomic Energy Commission chairman Anil Kakodkar hailed India’s academic institutions as the backbone of progress during a conclave held in Mumbai.​

Speaking at the 'Industry-Academia Partnership for Nuclear Science and Technology Development' event organised by the Institute of Chemical Technology (ICT), Kakodkar highlighted the vital contribution of academic thought leadership to the nation's long-term policy-making and innovation landscape.

Academia: A Guiding Light for National Policy​

Kakodkar, who currently serves as Chancellor of the Homi Bhabha National Institute (HBNI), stressed the indispensable role of academia in shaping not just India’s scientific direction but also its future.

“The academic community, in its pursuit of independent and original thought, plays a critical role in shaping the future of our nation and the world. It serves as a guiding light for governments as they chart long-term policies and goals,” he stated.
He further commended the ICT for championing research and development (R&D) in nuclear energy, calling it a pivotal area for India’s sustainable growth and energy security.

ICT Launches New Centre for Energy Science and Technology​

During the event, the ICT announced the launch of its Centre for Energy Science and Technology, which will focus on next-generation nuclear technologies. Key areas of research will include:
  • Small Modular Reactors (SMRs)
  • Micro Modular Reactors (MMRs)
  • Hydrogen Generation
  • Accelerator Technologies
According to a release, the initiative aims to foster innovation and talent development in line with national goals.

ICT Chancellor Highlights Innovation Imperative​

Prof J B Joshi, Chancellor of ICT, reinforced the importance of innovation in securing India’s energy future.

“India's energy security depends on our ability to innovate boldly and act decisively. ICT's Centre for Energy Science and Technology will be a beacon of research, talent, and technology, aligned with the national vision for self-reliance and sustainability,” Joshi remarked.
The conclave brought together leaders from academia and industry to chart collaborative pathways for advancing nuclear science and technology in India.
