New Delhi, May 14
On Wednesday, Delhi Chief Minister and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) national convener Arvind Kejriwal congratulated Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on taking oath as the 52nd Chief Justice of India.
Taking to social media platform X, Kejriwal wrote, "Heartiest congratulations to Justice Bhushan Ramkrishna Gavai on taking oath as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of India. May his tenure uphold the highest ideals of justice and strengthen people's faith in the judiciary."
Senior AAP leader and Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly, Atishi, also extended her greetings. "I wish him a tenure defined by unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and the Constitution—further fortifying the pillars of our democracy and ensuring the protection of every citizen's rights," she said in a post on X.
President Droupadi Murmu administered Justice Gavai the oath of office during a brief swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. He succeeded Justice Sanjiv Khanna, who retired on Tuesday after reaching the mandatory retirement age 65.
Appointed to the Supreme Court on May 24, 2019, Justice Gavai will serve as Chief Justice for over six months, with his tenure ending on November 23. Notably, he took the oath in Hindi.
Justice Gavai becomes the second Dalit to hold the Chief Justice of India post, after Justice K G Balakrishnan, marking a momentous milestone in India's judicial landscape.
