February 12, Srinagar:

The Wildlife Department of Kashmir organised the Asian Waterbird Census (AWC) 2026 at Hokersar wetland to monitor and conserve avian biodiversity in the Valley. Wildlife officials, bird experts, and field staff carried out systematic counts of migratory and resident bird species as part of the annual exercise.

Officials stated that over 12 lakh migratory birds from Siberia, Europe, and Central Asia have reached Kashmir this season. These birds are spread across 27 major wetlands, with data being collected from 28 designated census points.

Speaking to DD News, Wildlife Warden Kashmir Mohammad Altaf Dantoo said that the census is vital for tracking bird populations, assessing the health of wetlands, and strengthening conservation strategies. He reaffirmed that Kashmir continues to hold significance as a key habitat for migratory birds during the winter season.

The department said that the findings of the census will help in planning future conservation measures and ensuring the protection of wetland ecosystems in the region.
