Latest Arrest in Kokrajhar as Crackdown Intensifies

Guwahati, May 17 — The Assam government has intensified its crackdown on individuals allegedly supporting Pakistan in the aftermath of the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack. With the latest arrest from Kokrajhar district, the total number of individuals apprehended in the state has risen to 65, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed on Saturday.

The Chief Minister announced the development on social media platform X, stating, “@KokrajharPolice arrested Joynal Abedin from Gossaigaon for supporting Pakistan on social media.” He further emphasized the scale of the ongoing operation by noting, “65 anti-nationals arrested till now."

Police Target Social Media Posts

The Assam Police have been acting firmly against what they describe as 'anti-India' and 'pro-Pakistan' content on social media. This campaign follows the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives.

Notably, among those arrested is Aminul Islam, a Member of the Legislative Assembly from the opposition All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF). Initially held on sedition charges for allegedly defending Pakistan’s role in the Pahalgam attack, Islam was later detained under the National Security Act (NSA) after securing bail in the original case.

Chief Minister Vows Unrelenting Action

Chief Minister Sarma reiterated his administration’s firm stance on the matter, stating that the state-wide crackdown on "traitors" would continue without compromise. “Nobody will be spared,” he warned, underscoring the government’s zero-tolerance approach to what it deems anti-national activities.

The arrests and ongoing investigations reflect a broader drive to curb any support for hostile entities in the wake of rising national security concerns.
