Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma Cuts Electricity Rates by Re 1 per Unit for Domestic Consumers

Assam's Power Bills to Drop from April, Further Reductions Promised

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced a significant relief for residents on Tuesday by slashing electricity tariffs by Re 1 per unit for all domestic consumers across the state.

The reduction, effective immediately from April 1, includes all categories of domestic electricity users, covering both Jeevan Dhara and high tension (HT) consumers. Officials also stated that for all other consumer categories, the electricity charges will be lowered by Re 0.25 per kWh.

Taking to social media, Chief Minister Sarma humorously reassured citizens about the authenticity of his announcement, saying, "It’s April – temperatures will increase but your bijli bill will decrease. Beginning today, families in Assam will see a drop of Re 1 per unit in electricity bills along with a rebate at the end of the year. PS: This isn’t an April Fool Prank 😊."

The rate cut aligns with the proposals outlined in Assam's annual state budget, approved by the Legislative Assembly last month. Additionally, Sarma hinted at the possibility of further tariff reductions to be announced later this year, offering more financial ease to Assam’s households.

This step by the government aims to alleviate household expenditures, particularly as summer approaches and electricity consumption typically surges.
