Guwahati, May 10 – Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Saturday that two more individuals have been arrested in connection with allegedly "defending" Pakistan, bringing the total number of arrests to 50 since the Pahalgam terror attack on April 22 that claimed 26 lives. The latest arrests were made in Biswanath and Morigaon, with the accused identified as Jobbur Islam and Ruhul Amin, respectively. Sarma shared the update through a post on social media platform X, stating:
Among those previously arrested is Aminul Islam, a sitting MLA from the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), who has been charged with sedition for allegedly defending Pakistan and commenting on its alleged role in the April 22 terror attack.“Update on Crackdown against traitors. Total of 50 anti-nationals are now enjoying prison hospitality. We will continue to hunt these traitors.”
The arrests follow a sweeping operation initiated after the Pahalgam terror incident, as the Assam government intensifies its stance against individuals accused of making pro-Pakistan remarks or questioning India’s security narrative.
The crackdown is being positioned as a strict zero-tolerance approach toward what the Assam government deems "anti-national" behavior. Authorities have indicated that the arrests are likely to continue as investigations progress.
