Assam Cracks Down on Pakistan Sympathisers: 58 Arrested So Far.webp

Guwahati, May 14 — The Assam government has intensified its crackdown on individuals allegedly expressing support for Pakistan, with two more arrests reported from Sonitpur district, taking the total number of arrests to 58, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed.

Announcing the development on social media platform X, Sarma wrote, “58 Pak sympathisers are behind bars. They will also receive special care for their anti-national activities.” He reiterated that the operation against such “traitors” would continue with zero tolerance. “Nobody will be spared,” the Chief Minister asserted.

The arrests follow the April 22 terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir’s Pahalgam, where 26 people were killed after terrorists targeted the Baisaran tourist site. The attack has sparked nationwide outrage and led to a series of actions across several states, including Assam.

Sarma had previously indicated that the National Security Act (NSA) would be invoked against certain individuals among those arrested for their alleged anti-national conduct.

Earlier, All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) MLA Aminul Islam was taken into custody on sedition charges after he was accused of defending Pakistan and downplaying its role in the Pahalgam terror incident.

The state government has maintained that these arrests are necessary to safeguard national integrity and will pursue legal action against those found supporting or glorifying hostile entities.
