Aizawl, Feb 2 (PTI) – In a major crackdown on illegal smuggling, the Assam Rifles seized heroin, methamphetamine tablets, and smuggled areca nuts worth ₹10.9 crore in separate operations near the India-Myanmar border in Mizoram’s Champhai and Lawngtlai districts, an official said on Sunday.
Acting on intelligence inputs, personnel from the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with the state excise and narcotics department, confiscated 3.3 kg of methamphetamine tablets valued at ₹9.99 crore from Ngur village in Champhai. The official confirmed that three individuals were arrested in connection with the seizure.
Methamphetamine, a highly addictive stimulant, has been a growing concern due to its impact on public health and law enforcement efforts.
In a separate operation, the Assam Rifles recovered 116.81 grams of heroin worth ₹81.76 lakh from a person at Thingkah village in Lawngtlai district.
Additionally, the security forces seized 32 bags of smuggled Burmese areca nuts valued at ₹17.92 lakh from Zotlang area in Champhai on Saturday.
The ongoing operations underscore the Assam Rifles’ commitment to curbing drug trafficking and cross-border smuggling activities in the region. Further investigations are underway.
