Assessing Bird Populations in South Kashmir.webp

The Wildlife Department and the Wullar Conservation and Management Authority begin a scientific survey to assess the migratory Siberian and local bird population and strengthen wetland conservation efforts.

February 12, Pulwama: A Bird Census Programme was launched on Wednesday at South Kashmir's largest Lalpora Lake by the Wildlife Department in collaboration with the Wullar Conservation and Management Authority. The initiative aims to assess the population of migratory Siberian birds along with various local species inhabiting the lake.

During the programme, wildlife officials, experts and students carried out systematic monitoring and recording of different bird species present at Lalpora Lake. The exercise is intended to generate data for understanding biodiversity trends and evaluating the ecological health of the wetland.

Officials said the census will play a vital role in framing effective conservation strategies and ensuring the protection of the natural habitat of avian species in the region. They added that regular monitoring is essential for safeguarding wetlands and maintaining ecological balance.

The organizers emphasized that such initiatives not only help in preserving important water bodies but also promote environmental awareness and community participation in conservation efforts.
