Awareness of climate change must for tackling challenges, building resilience: TN CM

Chennai, Feb 4 (PTI) – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M K Stalin called for heightened awareness of climate change and its far-reaching impacts, including natural disasters, stressing that educating society on these issues would foster resilience and preparedness. Speaking at the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Summit 3.0, organized by the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission, Stalin outlined the state government’s efforts to tackle the climate crisis through public education and strategic policy interventions.

Addressing the summit, the Chief Minister emphasized that increasing awareness about climate change would help communities understand its effects, enabling them to adapt and recover from natural disasters more effectively. "We need to face the challenges of climate change with resilience. Through awareness and adaptation, our society will become climate-literate," Stalin said.

The Tamil Nadu government is committed to this mission by setting up ecology clubs in schools across the state. Additionally, a climate change policy will soon be unveiled, and specialized training will be provided to government staff, especially in departments that are significantly impacted by climate change, such as agriculture and water resources.

Highlighting the global nature of the climate crisis, Stalin pointed to recent natural disasters, such as severe flooding in Dubai, China, Brazil, Germany, and Spain, as well as forest fires in Los Angeles, landslides in Kerala’s Wayanad, and a minor landslip in Tamil Nadu’s Thiruvannamalai. According to the Chief Minister, climate change is the underlying cause of these devastating events.

Stalin reinforced that climate change is the greatest challenge humanity faces today, which is why the Tamil Nadu government is intensifying efforts to raise awareness and introduce effective measures to combat its effects. "To mitigate the impacts of climate change and natural disasters, it is crucial that all sections of society understand the science behind climate change, its consequences, and how to adapt to it," he added. "Through education and awareness, we can create a climate-conscious and resilient society."

Echoing this sentiment, Finance, Environment, and Climate Change Minister Thangam Thennarasu stated that climate change is a disaster that affects all sections of society, regardless of background or industry. "As part of our ongoing efforts, four missions have been established to implement climate adaptation and mitigation strategies," Thennarasu explained, noting that these initiatives are being driven by the Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission.

The Tamil Nadu Climate Change Mission document highlights the state's vulnerability to climate-related natural hazards, which are becoming more frequent and severe. The document warns that climate change poses an escalating risk of natural disasters, underscoring the need for comprehensive action.

In response, the Tamil Nadu government is working on long-term solutions to build a greener, cleaner, and more resilient state. The state's focus is on promoting affordability, sustainability, and scalability in its climate transformation efforts, ensuring that the measures put in place are effective and enduring.
