Dhaka, February 13 The Bangladesh Nationalist Party, with an absolute majority and a strong opposition, Jamaat-e-Islami, will be a very effective combination for the country's next democratic path, a top BNP leader said on Friday as his party is set to regain power.
With more than 151 seats in the 300-seat parliament, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is on track to achieve a decisive victory in the landmark parliamentary elections held on Thursday, local media reports said. The Jamaat-e-Islami, leading an 11-party alliance, is expected to win or secure around 75 seats, media reports said around noon.
"This was a historic election, conducted in cooperation with the Election Commission, the Interim government, political parties, and most importantly, the general people of the country," Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, advisor to BNP chairman Tarique Rahman, told
"We have successfully brought these four elements together... The results are out, and the people of Bangladesh are very pleased to have expressed their choice. Accordingly, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has achieved an absolute majority," he said.
Pointing out that the opposition, under the leadership of Jamaat-e-Islami, has also secured a significant number of seats, Alal said, "In the Parliament, the absolute majority party, BNP, and the strong opposition, Jamaat-e-Islami, will create a good dynamic... This will be a very good combination for the next democratic path in Bangladesh."
The 13th parliamentary elections held after a period of political turmoil, instability, and a fragile security situation, including widespread attacks on minorities, following the student-led protests that brought down the over 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina's Awami League in August 2024, have taken on significant importance.
It is becoming increasingly clear that BNP's top leader, Tarique Rahman, is set to become the prime minister, replacing the Interim government headed by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
