Agartala, March 1: A Bangladeshi national was shot dead by the Border Security Force (BSF) in Tripura’s Sepahijala district after a violent clash erupted between smugglers and Indian border guards, officials said on Saturday.
According to a statement released by BSF, the incident occurred late Friday evening when around 20 to 25 Bangladeshi smugglers illegally crossed into Indian territory near Putia village under the jurisdiction of Kalamchoura police station. Upon entering, they joined forces with several local associates on the Indian side.
When BSF personnel confronted the group, the smugglers launched an aggressive attack, resulting in injuries to one jawan. As the confrontation escalated, the smugglers made a second attempt to assault the BSF personnel and tried to snatch their weapons.
“In self-defence, one of the jawans fired a single round from a pump-action gun, injuring one Bangladeshi smuggler,” the BSF statement said. The wounded smuggler was immediately transported to Bishalgarh Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. His body has been kept in the hospital’s morgue awaiting further formalities.
The injured BSF jawan is currently receiving medical treatment at the same hospital. The situation remains under close monitoring, as authorities continue their investigation into the cross-border smuggling incident.
