Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, Feb 22: In a landmark verdict, a Bareilly court has sentenced four police constables to ten years of rigorous imprisonment for attempting to murder a senior woman officer in 2010.

Special public prosecutor Manoj Bajpai stated that after a detailed hearing, Special Judge Suresh Kumar Gupta of the Anti-Corruption Court-I convicted the accused—Ravindra, Manoj Kumar, Ravindra Singh, and Dharmendra—on February 21. The sentencing was pronounced on February 25.

The case dates back to 2010 when Kalpana Saxena, then Superintendent of Traffic Police, received information about police personnel extorting money from truck drivers. Acting swiftly, she, along with her bodyguard, arrived at the scene in her private vehicle around 6:30 PM. Upon witnessing the illegal extortion by the four constables, she attempted to take action.

Sensing trouble, the accused constables fled the scene in their car. When Saxena chased them, they allegedly attempted to run her over. Refusing to back down, she persisted, at which point the accused reportedly pushed her onto the road, causing injuries.

Following the incident, an FIR was registered at the Cantt Police Station, leading to the immediate suspension of the four constables. A thorough police investigation culminated in a chargesheet, ultimately resulting in their conviction by the court.

Kalpana Saxena, an IPS officer of the 2010 batch, is currently serving as Deputy Inspector General (DIG) in the Ghaziabad Police Commissionerate.
