New Delhi, March 3: BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia strongly criticized Congress spokesperson Shama Mohamed on Monday for her controversial remarks questioning Indian cricket captain Rohit Sharma's fitness and leadership abilities, calling the comments "very unfortunate" during India's ongoing ICC Champions Trophy campaign.
India secured their semifinal spot in the marquee ICC event by topping their group after defeating New Zealand on Sunday. The team is set to face Australia in a crucial semifinal clash in Dubai on Tuesday.
Reacting sharply to Shama Mohamed's comments, Saikia stated, "It's very unfortunate for a responsible person to pass such trivial comments when the team is in the midst of such a marquee ICC tournament. Such remarks can have a demoralizing effect on an individual player or even the whole team."
Saikia further emphasized that the Indian squad is delivering strong performances, evident by their success so far. He added, "All the players are performing to their highest potential, and the results speak for themselves. I urge individuals to refrain from making derogatory statements merely for personal publicity at the expense of national interest."
Shama Mohamed faced intense backlash after her controversial social media post criticizing Rohit's fitness, in which she claimed he was "fat for a sportsman" and described him as "the most unimpressive Captain India has ever had."
Acknowledging the inappropriate nature of these comments, Congress intervened promptly, instructing Mohamed to remove the contentious post from her 'X' account, which she subsequently deleted.
India's semifinal against Australia remains a highly anticipated match, with fans and officials hopeful that the team's momentum remains unaffected by off-field controversies.
