Jalpaiguri (WB), February 4 (PTI) — A man from West Bengal has been sentenced to death for the brutal killings of his wife and 18-month-old daughter. The tragic incident occurred on March 27, 2023, at their home in the Looksan tea garden, located in the Nagrakata area of Jalpaiguri district.
Lal Singh Oraon was found guilty by the Jalpaiguri sessions court for hacking his wife, Sakhi Oraon, and their young daughter to death with an axe. Additional District and Sessions Judge Biplab Roy handed down the capital punishment after a thorough examination of the case.
The crime came to light following a police complaint lodged by Lal Singh's mother-in-law, who reported that her daughter and granddaughter had been brutally murdered by Lal Singh. He was arrested after the killings and, in an apparent attempt to evade responsibility, tried to take his own life. Lal Singh inflicted self-injuries using a knife, resulting in abdominal wounds. He was subsequently treated for his injuries before being presented in court.
Jalpaiguri Superintendent of Police, Khandbahale Umesh Ganpat, confirmed that Lal Singh was arrested after receiving medical care. Public Prosecutor Prasenjit Deb noted that 13 witnesses testified during the trial, which contributed to the conviction.
The court found Lal Singh guilty of double murder last week, and the death sentence was formally handed down on Tuesday.
This heinous crime has shocked the local community and raised questions about domestic violence and its devastating effects.
