Kolkata, Feb 2 (PTI) – A woman was discovered lying in an open field with injuries in Joynagar, located in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district, on Sunday morning, police reported.
The incident took place in Jangalia village, where locals found the woman in distress and immediately informed authorities. She was initially taken to a nearby medical facility before being transferred to Baruipur Hospital for advanced treatment. While her condition is reported to be stable, doctors have described it as serious, a senior police officer confirmed.
According to family members, the woman had left home on Saturday night but never reached her intended destination. Her disappearance raised concerns, prompting an ongoing investigation.
“We have launched a probe, and the culprits will be apprehended soon,” the officer assured.
Taking to social media platform X, Majumdar claimed:
"In Joynagar, a married young woman was abducted and brutally raped, after which an attempt was made to strangle her with a scarf. Villagers found her in a critical condition in an open field and rescued her. However, from the abduction to the rape, the police failed to trace the culprit!"
Majumdar further criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, accusing her of remaining silent on crimes against women in the state.
"Even on the day of Saraswati Puja, the brutality of crimes against women did not stop in West Bengal! Yet, the shameless female Chief Minister of Bengal has not uttered a single word!" he wrote.
He also questioned the law and order situation in the state, alleging that crimes against women were rampant due to the administration’s failure to act decisively.
"What kind of monstrous government is running in West Bengal, where brutal murders and rapes are happening every day? How many more women in West Bengal will lose their dignity and lives because of your shameless appeasement of criminals?"
The incident has ignited widespread debate on women’s safety in West Bengal, with opposition parties using it to target the state government. As the probe continues, the political tensions surrounding the case are expected to intensify.
