Police Launch Probe, Question Staff After Viral Video Sparks Outrage

Bengaluru, May 17 — A case has been registered against the owner of a hotel in Bengaluru after a derogatory message targeting Kannada people appeared on the establishment's variable message display board, police officials confirmed on Saturday.

The incident came to light after a video of the offensive content, reportedly displayed on Friday night, circulated widely on social media, prompting swift police action. The controversial message was immediately taken down.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southeast) Sarah Fathima stated that the incident occurred under the Madiwala police station limits. “A derogatory message against Kannada people was found on a variable message system board outside the hotel. A suo-moto case was filed by the sub-inspector who monitors social media activity,” she said.

The case has been registered against the owner of Gs Suites, the hotel in question. According to police, five employees of the hotel have been detained for questioning, while the hotel owner is reportedly abroad. Notices will be issued to all individuals connected with the case as part of the investigation.

A detailed inquiry is underway to determine how the offensive message was displayed. DCP Fathima noted that initial findings suggest the hotel had previously complained to a Koramangala-based company responsible for the display board, citing the appearance of various unexpected messages.

“The hotel contracted the company about three years ago for the installation of the boards. Since May 8, different types of messages have been appearing. We have summoned the company representatives to understand how the system functions,” she said.

When asked about the possibility of hacking, the DCP said that police are examining all angles. “We are in the process of collecting electronic evidence to establish how the message was generated,” she added.

The incident has stirred strong reactions on social media, with many demanding accountability and calling for stricter scrutiny of public digital displays. The investigation is ongoing.
