Guwahati, March 1: In a major step towards improving connectivity between India and Bhutan, Indian Railways has finalized the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for a new railway link connecting Kokrajhar in Assam to Gelephu in Bhutan, according to a Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) spokesperson. This will be Bhutan’s first-ever railway link, marking a significant milestone in the Himalayan nation's infrastructure development.
The 69.04-km railway line is expected to be built at an estimated cost of ₹3,500 crore. With the final location survey already completed, the project now awaits approval for implementation.
Key Infrastructure Developments
The railway line will feature six new stations at Balajan, Garubhasa, Runikhata, Shantipur, Dadgiri, and Gelephu. The plan also includes:- Two important bridges
- 29 major bridges and 65 minor bridges
- One road over-bridge
- 39 road under-bridges
- Two viaducts spanning 11 meters each
Strategic and Economic Impact
The proposed rail link is expected to boost bilateral ties by facilitating trade, tourism, and cultural exchanges between India and Bhutan. It will also provide seamless transportation access, significantly benefiting Bhutan’s connectivity with Indian markets and beyond.Additionally, the railway project will position the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) as a key trade and transit hub, offering economic opportunities for local businesses and communities.
Alignment with India’s Foreign Policy
The initiative aligns with the ‘Act East Policy’ and ‘Neighbourhood First Policy’, which aim to strengthen India’s relations with neighboring countries through enhanced connectivity and trade.With the DPR awaiting approval, the railway project is set to be a game-changer in regional connectivity, reinforcing India’s commitment to fostering closer ties with Bhutan while boosting infrastructure in the Northeast.
