Guwahati, Feb 26 – A high-level Bhutanese delegation, led by Agriculture and Livestock Minister Younten Phuntsho, met with Assam Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan on Wednesday. The discussions focused on deepening the historic and cultural ties between Assam and Bhutan while exploring avenues for cooperation in tourism, education, and sustainable agriculture.
Governor Acharya emphasized the long-standing bond between Assam and Bhutan, nurtured over centuries through economic, historical, and cultural exchanges. He underscored the mutual admiration between the leadership of both nations, exemplified by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bhutan’s reigning King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck.
Highlighting the need for joint initiatives, the governor advocated for the promotion of eco-tourism and conservation efforts benefiting both regions. He also proposed the development of spiritual tourism circuits to strengthen cultural and religious connections.
On education and skill development, Acharya noted Assam's initiative of reserving five seats in government medical colleges for Bhutanese students, demonstrating a commitment to providing them with access to quality education and professional training.
The governor also commended Bhutan’s leadership in organic farming, recognizing its role in promoting sustainable agricultural practices. In response, Minister Phuntsho briefed him on the upcoming Gelephu Mindfulness City project, emphasizing its potential to enhance cross-border collaboration and economic opportunities for both Assam and Bhutan. The minister sought the governor’s support in ensuring the project's success, which Acharya fully endorsed.
The Bhutanese delegation also congratulated the Assam government on the successful organization of the Advantage Assam 2.0 Summit, acknowledging its role in fostering economic growth and regional collaboration.
