Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Orders Heightened Vigil Along Nepal and Bangladesh Borders Amid Security Concerns

Nitish calls for more vigil on border with Nepal, in areas close to B'desh.webp

Purnea, Bihar, May 10 — Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday chaired a high-level security meeting in Purnea, calling for "extraordinary vigil" in border districts amid heightened tensions following the recent India-Pakistan conflict. Although later in the day both nations agreed to a ceasefire, the state government is ramping up security efforts to thwart any potential threats from anti-national elements.

Border Districts Under Tight Surveillance

The meeting, convened to assess the security situation in Bihar's sensitive border zones, particularly those adjoining Nepal and near the Bangladesh boundary, concluded with firm directives from the Chief Minister.

“Heightened security must be maintained at all sensitive installations and places like crucial roads, bridges, railway lines, LPG depots, and religious places,” the official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office said.

Kumar emphasized intensified patrolling and search operations in border areas to prevent infiltration, noting that the porous Indo-Nepal border has historically been a route for illegal crossings.

Coordination with Army and Paramilitary Forces

Officials have been instructed to work in close coordination with the Indian Army, Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and other paramilitary forces. Specific districts including Purnea, Kishanganj, Katihar, Araria, and Supaul — all of which share proximity to international borders — are to remain on high alert.

“Security personnel must be adequately deployed and area domination patrolling should be intensified,” the statement added. The government also assured full support to defence and paramilitary forces operating in these regions.

Top-Level Attendance and Nationwide Sentiment

Key officials in attendance included Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, Chief Secretary Amrit Lal Meena, Development Commissioner Pratyaya Amrit, Director General of Police Vinay Kumar, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Arvind Kumar Chaudhary, and senior security and administrative officials from the concerned districts.

Expressing solidarity with the nation’s security forces, Kumar stated, “The entire country is united against terrorism. The country is proud of the courage and valour of the Indian Army and we all have unwavering faith and pride in the leadership of the respected Prime Minister Narendra Modi.”

Ceasefire Developments

The meeting took place against the backdrop of heightened national security concerns. However, by late Saturday, the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMO) of India and Pakistan agreed to halt all military action on land, air, and sea from 5 pm onward.

Despite the ceasefire, Bihar's administration is leaving no room for complacency and is pressing ahead with a robust security protocol in border districts.
