Imphal, Feb 3 (PTI) – Despite facing significant challenges, including the COVID-19 pandemic and ongoing ethnic violence, Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh emphasized that his BJP-led government has been steadfast in driving development across both the hill and valley regions since 2017.
Addressing a gathering at the foundation stone-laying ceremony for multi-storied government quarters at Langol in Imphal West district, Singh acknowledged that nearly two and a half years were lost to the pandemic. Additionally, the current ethnic crisis, which erupted on May 3, 2023, has further impeded progress, resulting in the deaths of over 250 people and leaving thousands homeless due to clashes between the valley-based Meiteis and the Kuki-Zo communities in the hill districts.
"Despite these setbacks, the government has persisted with developmental projects in both the hills and the valley while simultaneously working to resolve the ongoing crisis," Singh stated. He also pointed out that the prolonged rainy season in the state had further delayed certain projects.
Alongside the Langol project, similar government quarters will be constructed at New Checkon in Imphal, the Chief Minister announced. Urging citizens to prioritize environmental conservation and cleanliness, he called for proactive measures to keep drains unblocked and prevent waterlogging.
Singh also revealed initiatives to rejuvenate the Lamphalpat wetlands, envisioning it as a future recreational hotspot upon completion. He urged contractors to ensure timely execution of all developmental projects.
At another event, Singh inaugurated an Art and Culture building and an Open Gym, besides laying foundation stones for a 33/11 KVA Sub Station and a swimming pool inside Manipur University campus at Canchipur in Imphal East district. Addressing students, he encouraged them to contribute meaningfully to society after graduation.
Furthermore, the CM stressed the importance of educational institutions remaining free from disturbances and suggested holding discussions with faculty, teachers, researchers, and students to analyze and address the core issues of the ongoing ethnic conflict.
Singh reaffirmed the government's commitment to development, despite prevailing challenges, and called for collective efforts to ensure progress and peace in Manipur.
