New Delhi, Feb 27: BJP MLA Neelam Pahalwan has proposed renaming Najafgarh in southwest Delhi as ‘Nahargarh,’ asserting that the Mughals had altered its original name. Speaking on the floor of the Delhi Assembly, Pahalwan stated that this renaming effort has been in discussion for a long time.

Pahalwan, who recently won the Najafgarh Assembly seat by defeating AAP’s Tarun Kumar with a margin of over 29,000 votes, highlighted historical events to support her demand. She mentioned that during the Mughal era, particularly under Alam-II, Najafgarh faced several challenges. She also referenced Raja Nahar Singh’s role in integrating the region into Delhi’s territory during the 1857 revolt.

"We have been trying for a long time to change the name from Najafgarh to Nahargarh. The people of the constituency have high expectations that this Assembly will support our efforts," she said.

This move is part of a broader push among BJP leaders in Delhi to rename various constituencies. Following his electoral victory in Mustafabad, senior BJP leader Mohan Singh Bisht also announced his intention to propose renaming the area as either ‘Shiv Puri’ or ‘Shiv Vihar’ after formally assuming office.

The renaming proposals come after the BJP’s decisive victory in the February 5 Delhi Assembly elections, which ended AAP’s over-a-decade-long rule. The BJP secured 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP was reduced to 22 seats, and Congress failed to win any.

The eighth Delhi Assembly's first session is underway, with significant policy discussions expected in the coming days.
