Bhubaneswar, Feb 4 (PTI) – In a firm stance against obscenity in cultural performances, Odisha BJP MLA Babu Singh has warned 'Jatra' groups of strict action if they engage in obscene dance performances at the upcoming Khandagiri Mahotsav and Kharavela Mela in Bhubaneswar.
The annual festival, held at Khandagiri Hills on ‘Magha Saptami,’ will witness around 13 Jatra groups showcasing their performances starting Wednesday. However, concerns over inappropriate content in some of these performances have prompted strong opposition from local activists and political leaders.
On Monday, Singh, who represents Ekamra-Bhubaneswar, along with 100 supporters, including women, took an oath before Goddess Barabhuja (Maa Durga) at Khandagiri Hills to oppose any obscene acts in Jatra shows. He warned that if necessary, they would resort to using 'lathis' (sticks) against performers indulging in vulgarity.
“We are determined to safeguard our Odia culture and heritage. The Khandagiri Kumbh Mela and Kharavela Mahotsav will be celebrated with great grandeur this year. However, we have resolved to prevent any form of obscenity in public performances,” Singh stated. He also announced a special drive against vulgar acts, emphasizing the need to protect the sanctity of cultural events.
The MLA urged Jatra groups and artists to maintain decorum in their performances, warning that activists carrying wooden sticks will be stationed at Khandagiri to monitor and take action against any violators. Defending his stand, Singh asserted, “First, I am an Odia, then an MLA. I will fight to preserve the dignity of our culture. Those indulging in immoral activities will face consequences.”
Meanwhile, the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) has issued a strict advisory, urging Jatra groups to ensure that their performances remain respectful and free from vulgarity. BMC Commissioner Rajesh P Patilreinforced this, stating, "There is no place for obscenity or vulgarity in public performances."
As the festival approaches, heightened scrutiny on Jatra performances signals a push towards preserving cultural integrity, ensuring that entertainment remains respectful and appropriate for all audiences.
