The delegation, led by senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Faggan Singh Kulaste, met Rajya Sabha Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar, urging disciplinary action against Gandhi. They argued that her remarks had demeaned the dignity of the President’s office.
The controversy stems from a viral video capturing a conversation between Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra following President Murmu’s address to a joint session of Parliament on Friday. In the clip, Sonia Gandhi was purportedly heard saying, "The poor lady, the President, was getting very tired by the end… she could hardly speak, poor thing."
BJP MPs strongly condemned the statement, asserting in their notice that it reflected an "elitist and anti-tribal mindset" and a lack of sensitivity toward tribal struggles.
"We write this with great dismay about certain unparliamentary, derogatory, and demeaning remarks recently made by Smt. Sonia Gandhi against the Hon'ble President of India. This warrants serious consideration and disciplinary action,"the notice read.
The MPs further stated that such comments not only tarnish the dignity of the President's office but also violate parliamentary norms and conventions.
Meanwhile, 22 tribal parliamentarians, including Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, also submitted a separate breach of privilege notice to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. This notice sought action against Independent MP Pappu Yadav over allegedly "insulting and anti-tribal" remarks directed at President Murmu.
The BJP's move signals an escalating political row over remarks targeting India's first tribal President, with demands for accountability and disciplinary measures against opposition leaders.
