The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has emerged as the dominant force in the Assam panchayat elections, leading across all panchayat bodies as vote counting entered its second day on Monday. Officials confirmed that the counting is proceeding under tight security across the state.The elections were conducted in two phases on May 2 and 7, covering 27 districts, marking the first local polls after the recent delimitation of constituencies. Ballot paper counting began at 8 a.m. on Sunday and is expected to continue until all results are finalized.
BJP and AGP Dominate Panchayat Tiers
According to the latest data from the Assam State Election Commission (ASEC), the BJP has secured 242 seats in Anchalik Panchayat constituencies, with its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) winning 30 seats. The opposition Congress has claimed 34 seats so far, while Raijor Dal and AIUDF have won one seat each. Independent candidates have secured 14 seats.In the Zilla Parishad tier, the BJP has won 26 seats, and AGP has claimed three. Other parties are yet to open their accounts in this category.
Thousands of Gram Panchayat Results Declared
The results for thousands of Gram Panchayat (GP) member seats have also been declared. These elections were contested by Independent candidates only, as party-based candidacy was not permitted at the GP level.ASEC officials reported that counting operations have continued uninterrupted since Sunday morning, with multiple teams working overnight to expedite the process. "We are hopeful that the final result will be out by tomorrow," said a senior commission official.
Key Election Figures and Security Measures
A total of 21,920 Gram Panchayat seats were contested, including 10,883 reserved for women. For Anchalik Panchayats, 2,192 seats were up for grabs, with 1,124 reserved for women, while 397 Zilla Parishad seats included 199 reserved for women.Additionally, 2,912 candidates were elected unopposed, comprising 34 Zilla Parishad members, 311 Anchalik Panchayat members, and 2,567 GP ward members.
In light of isolated incidents of violence during the polls, authorities have ensured robust security arrangements at all 39 counting centres statewide.
