Gangtok, March 1: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday urged the central government to establish a new, all-weather international airport in Sikkim, aiming to significantly enhance tourism and ensure uninterrupted air connectivity.
The appeal was made during a meeting with Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Cooperation, Murlidhar Mohol, who was visiting the state. The BJP delegation, led by the party’s Gangtok district president, Pempo Dorjee Lepcha, handed over a memorandum to the minister detailing their request.
Currently, Sikkim's only airport, located at Pakyong, faces frequent disruptions primarily due to issues such as poor visibility. Emphasizing this challenge, the BJP delegation also requested Minister Mohol to urgently upgrade infrastructure at Pakyong airport to enhance its reliability and operational efficiency.
The memorandum stated clearly that a new international airport, capable of functioning in all weather conditions, is crucial for strengthening Sikkim’s tourism sector, as it would ensure steady tourist inflow throughout the year.
Additionally, the BJP representatives urged the minister to revive the cooperative movement within Sikkim. They highlighted the importance of revitalizing cooperatives to boost the local economy and foster inclusive growth in the region.
