Thiruvananthapuram, May 12 – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Kerala has sharply criticized the Congress party and its senior leader Rahul Gandhi for demanding a special session of Parliament to discuss the Pahalgam terror attack, Operation Sindoor, and related cross-border tensions.
BJP state president Rajeev Chandrasekhar questioned the sincerity of the Congress leadership, alleging that both Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi frequently skip parliamentary sessions and remain absent during crucial legislative proceedings.
“Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi are the ones who skip Parliament when the House is in session and disappear when important legislation is being passed,” Chandrasekhar said in a statement issued Monday.
He emphasized that the authority to decide on convening a special session lies solely with the Union government, and not with opposition leaders.
Highlighting the recent military developments, Chandrasekhar asserted that India had delivered the most severe blow to Pakistan since independence. “The precise retaliatory strikes and the successful thwarting of Pakistan's counter-attacks have showcased the strength of our defence sector, built over the past 10 years,” he stated.
He reiterated that while India has never initiated conflict, it is fully prepared to respond decisively to any aggression.
The BJP’s response came after opposition leaders from both Houses of Parliament, including Rahul Gandhi and Mallikarjun Kharge, wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding an immediate special session. Their request aimed to deliberate on the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam, which killed 26 civilians, and the subsequent military escalation now being referred to as Operation Sindoor.
On May 10, India and Pakistan reportedly reached an understanding to halt all military actions, following what was described as one of the most intense confrontations between the two nations in recent decades.
The Congress leadership argued that a united front in Parliament was essential to send a strong message against terrorism, but the BJP has dismissed the demand as politically motivated.
