BJP Stages Protest in Ludhiana, Accuses AAP Government of Misusing Police Ahead of Bypoll

BJP Alleges Pressure on Party Workers and Political Interference in Police Transfers

LUDHIANA, April 1 — Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers held a demonstration outside the office of the Ludhiana Police Commissioner on Tuesday, accusing the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of misusing government machinery in the lead-up to the upcoming Ludhiana West assembly bypoll.

The protest, led by senior BJP leaders, raised concerns over alleged attempts by the AAP government to influence the election by using the police force to pressure BJP workers. Party leaders claimed that BJP activists were being coerced into either joining AAP or withdrawing from the saffron party’s campaign efforts.

Anil Sareen Alleges Manipulative Transfers and Intimidation

Punjab BJP General Secretary Anil Sareen alleged that the state government has orchestrated transfers of senior police officers in Ludhiana, replacing them with individuals who are politically aligned with the AAP. He claimed these new postings were part of a larger strategy to tilt the electoral field in favor of the ruling party.

Sareen further alleged that several Station House Officers (SHOs) have made threatening phone calls to BJP supporters, warning them against participating in the campaign. He termed this a "gross misuse" of administrative power aimed at giving the AAP candidate an undue advantage.

Memorandum Submitted to Police Commissioner

Following the protest, BJP leaders submitted a formal memorandum to Ludhiana Police Commissioner Swapan Sharma, detailing their grievances and demanding immediate corrective action.

Bypoll Triggered by Death of AAP MLA

The Ludhiana West assembly seat became vacant following the accidental death of AAP MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi, who succumbed to a gunshot injury after his licensed firearm discharged at his residence. The Election Commission has yet to announce the date for the bypoll.
