Senior officers, including Amritsar Police Commissioner Gurpreet Singh Bhullar, arrived at the scene to assess the situation. Bhullar emphasized that preliminary investigations suggest a minor impact, making it unlikely that the noise resulted from a grenade blast. However, he assured that authorities are probing all possibilities.
Police Rule Out Blast, Await Forensic Investigation
"The impact is negligible, and initial observations do not indicate an explosion," Bhullar stated. "However, we are investigating thoroughly to determine the exact cause."
According to Bhullar, police personnel stationed at a check post on the Fatehgarh Churian road bypass heard the sound and rushed to inspect the area. He clarified that the location was not an active police post but a temporary checkpoint set up for vehicle inspections.
"Officers heard the sound coming from the direction of GT Road. Upon checking, they found some damage on the road’s surface, but there was no significant impact nearby," he said.
To ensure a comprehensive probe, forensic experts will be called to analyze the scene, Bhullar added.
Recent Incidents Fuel Speculation
Dismissing fears of a grenade attack, Bhullar pointed out that such an explosion would have caused substantial damage to nearby structures. "There is minor damage to the road’s upper layer, but no visible impact on the adjacent wall, which contradicts the characteristics of a grenade explosion," he explained.
This incident comes in the wake of previous occurrences in Amritsar involving loud sounds and suspected explosions.
- January 28: Police arrested two individuals allegedly linked to a grenade attack outside the Gumtala police post.
- January 9: A loud boom was reported near the same Gumtala police post, which authorities later attributed to a car radiator explosion. However, terrorist outfit Babbar Khalsa International claimed responsibility for the incident.
- December 2023: A confirmed grenade attack took place outside the Islamabad police station in Amritsar, followed by another outside the Bakshiwala police post in Gurdaspur.
Public Urged to Stay Calm
Despite concerns fueled by past incidents, Bhullar urged the public to remain calm and avoid spreading rumors. He assured that the police are taking all necessary precautions and warned against the circulation of misinformation that could create unnecessary panic.
Authorities continue their investigation, with forensic experts expected to provide further insights into the nature of the incident.
