Bengaluru Airport Unveils India’s Largest Greenfield Domestic Cargo Terminal
Bengaluru, Feb 27: Kempegowda International Airport (BLR Airport) has inaugurated India's largest Greenfield Domestic Cargo Terminal (DCT) in terms of designed capacity. Operated by Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL) in collaboration with Menzies Aviation, the state-of-the-art facility is set to revolutionize cargo operations with its advanced infrastructure and technology-driven processes.
Spanning 245,000 square feet over seven acres, the new terminal boasts a peak handling capacity of approximately 360,000 metric tons, with the potential to expand to 400,000 metric tons. This development is expected to enhance industry connectivity, strengthen supply chains, and drive sustainable innovations in regional trade.
The DCT is equipped with 42 truck docks, over 400 specialized cargo bins, conveyors integrated with X-ray machines, and nearly 30 Unit Load Device (ULD) build-up and breakdown stations. It also incorporates real-time data capture via 40 handheld terminals and self-service kiosks for agents, ensuring faster turnaround times and seamless cargo movement.
Speaking about the initiative, BIAL COO Satyaki Raghunath emphasized the strategic shift towards domestic cargo. "For years, international cargo dominated, but post-COVID, domestic cargo has gained prominence. This facility aligns with that growth and will significantly boost domestic traffic," he stated.
BLR Airport has consistently expanded its cargo capacity, tripling it every decade. "We started with 130,000 metric tons, reached 350,000 metric tons by our 10th anniversary, and this year, we expect to exceed 500,000 metric tons. The rise in cargo volume mirrors the growth in passenger traffic," Raghunath added.
Anil Kumar, Chief Executive Officer, highlighted the terminal’s integration of advanced digital solutions, including real-time shipment tracking, data analytics tools, and barcode-enabled communication systems. "The seamless exchange of data with airline systems will optimize timelines, minimize human intervention, and enhance cargo handling efficiency," he noted.
BLR Airport has already established itself as a major hub for perishable exports, including mangoes and coriander. The new terminal will further strengthen its perishable handling capacity while also accommodating valuable, fragile, and specialized cargo such as live animals, dangerous goods, and radioactive materials.
Built to Indian Green Building Council standards, the terminal incorporates eco-friendly features like skylighting, advanced ventilation systems, water conservation measures, and energy-efficient infrastructure, underscoring its commitment to sustainability.
With this expansion, BLR Airport continues to solidify its position as a leader in India’s air cargo industry, fostering regional trade and economic growth.
