February 14, New Delhi: The chief of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Tarique Rahman, said that maintaining peace and law and order would be the top priority of the incoming government.
Following his party's landslide victory in the 13th parliamentary election, Rahman warned that no form of anarchy would be tolerated. Addressing his first post-election press conference in Dhaka, he urged political actors to exercise restraint and called for national unity.
In the election, the BNP secured 209 seats, while Jamaat-e-Islami won 68 seats. Rahman dedicated the victory to the people, saying that democracy and the true essence of freedom had been restored.
Newly elected lawmakers are expected to take oath within three days of the Gazette notification, with the new Cabinet likely to be sworn in by February 18th.
The European Union's Election Observation Mission described the election as credible and competently managed, while noting areas for improvement, including greater inclusion of women, minorities, and persons with disabilities.
