Security Scare Disrupts Visitors, Sparks Extensive Search Operation
Kolkata, April 1 — A bomb threat email sent to the Indian Museum in Kolkata triggered a major security alert on Tuesday, prompting a swift response from security agencies. However, after an extensive search of the premises, the threat was declared a hoax by authorities. The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), which is tasked with safeguarding the historic museum, immediately informed New Market police station upon receiving the alarming message. In response, a comprehensive search was launched across the museum, which boasts more than 51 rooms housing priceless artifacts.
Museum Temporarily Closed Amid Panic
Following the threat, the museum was closed to visitors as a precautionary measure. Officials confirmed that the email claimed bombs would be planted within the museum on Tuesday but did not specify any particular location, heightening the challenge for security teams."The entire facility is being combed by our personnel. So far, no suspicious items have been discovered," a police officer involved in the operation stated.
To secure the area, authorities also cordoned off the footpath along Jawaharlal Nehru Road adjacent to the museum, installing guardrails to restrict movement.
Director Responds from Delhi
Museum Director A. D. Choudhury, currently in Delhi, confirmed the incident over the phone. “I have heard that an email had been sent. The CISF is conducting a search operation along with the police,” he said. When asked whether anything had been found, Choudhury responded, “I haven’t got any such update.” On the possibility of it being an April Fool’s Day prank, he noted, “Maybe, but we have to treat every such message seriously and inform the security agencies promptly.”
