Interim Relief for PVR Inox as Court Upholds Theatrical Release Clause
Mumbai, May 10 — The Bombay High Court has temporarily barred the release of Rajkummar Rao-starrer Bhool Chuk Maaf on any OTT or digital platform until eight weeks after its theatrical debut, following a contractual dispute between multiplex giant PVR Inox and the film's producers, Maddock Films. The dispute arose when Maddock Films decided to skip the theatrical release and announce a direct-to-OTT premiere on May 16. This move was challenged by PVR Inox, which argued that such a decision violated a prior agreement.
PVR Inox Accuses Maddock Films of Breach of Contract
According to PVR Inox's counsel, senior advocate Dinyar Madon, an agreement signed on May 6 clearly stated that Bhool Chuk Maaf would be released in theatres across India on May 9. The agreement also included a mandatory eight-week holdback period, during which the film could not be released on any other platform. However, Maddock Films abruptly terminated the agreement a day before the scheduled release, citing heightened national security concerns due to the ongoing India-Pakistan conflict, and opted for a digital release instead.
Maddock Films Argues Clause Conditional on Theatrical Release
Maddock’s legal representative, Venkatesh Dhond, countered that the holdback clause was contingent on an actual theatrical release and did not apply if the release did not occur in cinemas.Court Recognises Impact on PVR Inox's Reputation
Justice Arif Doctor, while issuing the interim order, acknowledged that PVR Inox had upheld its part of the deal by reserving screens, promoting the film, and opening ticket bookings. The sudden cancellation, the court noted, could damage the multiplex chain’s reputation and consumer goodwill. The court has, therefore, restrained Maddock Films from releasing Bhool Chuk Maaf on any platform for eight weeks following its eventual theatrical release in PVR Inox cinemas.
Next Hearing on June 16
The High Court has scheduled the next hearing for June 16, instructing Maddock Films to file a response by then. The legal battle raises significant questions about OTT release strategies and contractual obligations amid national disruptions, especially as India's entertainment industry increasingly navigates between traditional and digital distribution channels.
