New Delhi, Feb 4 (PTI) – External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Tuesday underscored the increasing significance of India’s relationship with the European Union, stating that in a world marked by volatility and uncertainty, stronger India-EU ties could serve as a key stabilizing factor.
Speaking at the inaugural session of the IIC-Bruegel annual seminar at the India International Centre, Jaishankar emphasized that the global order is undergoing profound changes, necessitating a reassessment of economic and political dynamics.
Without naming any country, the minister pointed out inconsistencies in the application of international law within India’s neighboring regions. "Even on a question like democracy and military rule, different standards have been applied to our neighbours in the east and our neighbour in the west," he remarked.
The IIC-Bruegel annual seminar, running from February 4-5, brings together policymakers and experts to discuss key global challenges.
Selective Application of Global Principles
Jaishankar highlighted the ongoing two major global conflicts, asserting that while these are framed as battles over principles and the future of world order, historical evidence reveals a selective and uneven application of these principles."Today, there is much talk about the world order unravelling, but the reality is that the consensus underpinning it had already started breaking down," he said, adding that the world is witnessing both North-South contradictions and an East-West divide.
Call for Multipolarity and Strategic Convergence
The minister emphasized that multipolarity and geopolitical rebalancing are now defining global trends, and the sooner nations accept this reality, the better they can adapt."It is essential that India and the EU reflect on appropriate policies with a quest for convergence and honesty in conversations. While there may be differences in priorities and specifics, our shared values—political democracy, pluralism, and market economies—bind us together," he said.
Jaishankar further acknowledged Europe’s growing strategic awakening in recent years, calling it a potential catalyst for deeper engagement between India and the EU, particularly in defence, security, and technology cooperation.
India-EU Relations More Critical Than Ever
Underscoring the urgency of strengthening ties, Jaishankar stated, "The bottom line is that our India-EU relationship is more important than ever before."As both regions navigate an uncertain global landscape, their partnership can serve as a pillar of stability, offering a balanced approach to economic cooperation, climate action, and digital technology advancement.
The remarks come at a crucial juncture as India and the EU continue discussions on trade agreements and strategic collaborations, further reinforcing their role in shaping a resilient global order.
