Boy steals gun from ex-cop's house, fires shots in air in Kolhapur

Pune, Feb 4 (PTI) – In a startling incident, a 13-year-old boy allegedly stole a revolver and ammunition from the residence of a retired police officer in Maharashtra’s Kolhapur district and fired multiple shots in the air, police reported on Tuesday.

The incident took place on February 1 in Ujalwadi village, located in Karvir taluka of Kolhapur.

According to officials, the boy's mother worked as a house help at the retired officer’s home. On that day, she took her son along and asked him to assist with cleaning. While tidying up, the teenager discovered the firearm and ammunition inside a drawer. Mistaking the weapon for a toy, he took it without realizing its real danger, an official from Gokul Shirgaon police station said.

The next day, the boy, accompanied by a friend, went to a grazing field near the village and fired several rounds into the air.

The retired officer soon noticed that his firearm was missing and promptly lodged a complaint with the police. A subsequent investigation uncovered that the boy had not only taken the revolver but had also discharged 20 rounds before the weapon was recovered.

Authorities found 20 empty cartridges and two unused rounds at the location. The police have registered a case under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and are further investigating the matter.
