Rs 300 Crore Facility Part of Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor
Lucknow, May 10 — As border tensions escalate with Pakistan, India is set to bolster its defence capabilities with the inauguration of a new BrahMos supersonic cruise missile production facility in Lucknow on Sunday. The state-of-the-art unit is part of the Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor and has been built at a cost of Rs 300 crore. The high-tech facility, sprawling across 80 hectares of land provided free of cost by the Uttar Pradesh government, will manufacture the BrahMos missile — one of the world’s fastest supersonic cruise missiles with a top speed of Mach 2.8 and a strike range between 290 to 400 kilometres. The missile system, developed by BrahMos Aerospace, a joint Indo-Russian venture, supports land, air, and sea launches and operates using a "fire and forget" mechanism.
Key Defence Infrastructure to be Unveiled
Alongside the production unit, the BrahMos Aerospace Integration and Testing Facility will also be inaugurated. This facility will play a critical role in assembling and rigorously testing the missiles, ensuring operational readiness and reliability.Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will attend the event virtually from Delhi, while Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath will be present in person to officially launch the facilities.
The inauguration will also see the opening of the Titanium and Super Alloys Materials Plant, also known as the Strategic Materials Technology Complex. This plant is designed to produce advanced materials for the defence and aerospace sectors.
Boost to Defence Manufacturing Ecosystem
A significant addition to the corridor's ecosystem will be the Defence Testing Infrastructure System (DTIS). The foundation stone for DTIS will be laid during the event. Once developed, DTIS will serve as a critical platform for testing and certifying defence equipment, enhancing quality assurance standards in the sector.Uttar Pradesh's Strategic Push in Defence
The Uttar Pradesh Defence Industrial Corridor, announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2018, includes six key nodes: Lucknow, Kanpur, Aligarh, Agra, Jhansi, and Chitrakoot. These hubs are attracting major investments to establish Uttar Pradesh as a leading defence manufacturing destination.According to official statements, Uttar Pradesh is the second Indian state after Tamil Nadu to establish a dedicated Defence Industrial Corridor, a move that reinforces India’s vision of self-reliance in defence production.
The timely launch of this strategic facility not only underscores India's defence preparedness but also signals its commitment to indigenous defence manufacturing amid rising regional security challenges.
